Q: How do you help clients create a realistic budget for their project?

A: I like to reverse engineer projects into a client’s realistic budget.  I encourage clients to stay off the internet when trying to compare costs since fees for services vary greatly across the country.  Based on the location, size and scope of the project, we provide a basic budget to help a client stay on target.

Q: What’s the best way to handle unexpected costs during construction?

A: I urge clients to be open-minded and flexible when we present possible solutions.  To correct an unforeseen issue underground it may mean you may have to use a less expensive tile when finishing the bathroom.  It is important to account for early unexpected costs down the road.

Q: How do you prioritize spending without compromising on quality or design?

A: Before we start a project, I have a conversation with the clients in their current home to understand how they want their new spaces to feel. I like to see how they interact with and in their current space to better understand how they will inhabit their new spaces.   I use that guidance to offer cost effective solutions that will capture the spirit of the design in a way they hadn’t imagined. I don’t scrimp on health and safety items.  

Q: What are some hidden costs homeowners might not anticipate?

A: In Los Angeles, clients are often surprised that they have to bring multiple parts of their home “up to code” even if the area is not part of a renovation or remodel. This may include installing interior sprinkler systems in an existing home to replacing entire electrical systems which can get costly quickly.
